How to Calculate Fuel Cost for a Road Trip

July 26, 2026 · 2 min read · Toolszy Team

Planning a road trip? Knowing the fuel cost upfront helps you budget and split costs fairly with friends.

The formula

Two quick steps:

  • Fuel needed = distance ÷ your vehicle's mileage (km per litre).
  • Cost = fuel needed × price per litre.

Example: a 500 km trip in a car that does 18 km/l, with fuel at ₹100/litre → 500 ÷ 18 ≈ 27.8 litres → about ₹2,780.

Tips to spend less

  • Keep tyres properly inflated and drive smoothly to improve mileage.
  • Don't carry unnecessary weight.
  • Compare fuel prices along your route.
