How to Calculate Your GPA (Step by Step)
July 18, 2026 · 3 min read · Toolszy Team
Your GPA (Grade Point Average) summarises your academic performance on a 4.0 scale. Here's how it's worked out.
The steps
- Convert each letter grade to points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, and so on).
- Multiply each grade's points by that course's credit hours.
- Add those up, then divide by your total credit hours.
That credit-weighting is why a hard, high-credit course affects your GPA more than a small elective.
Example
An A (4.0) in a 3-credit class and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit class = (4.0×3 + 3.0×4) ÷ 7 = 3.43 GPA.
